چکیده

The catalytic dehydration of glycerol to acrolein is investigated over silica-supported niobia catalysts in a continuous fixed-bed gas-phase reactor. Various supported niobia catalysts are prepared and characterized using surface analysis and spectroscopic methods (XRD, UV–Vis, XPS, N2 adsorption), as well as with ammonia adsorption microcalorimetry. Good results are obtained with initial glycerol conversions of over 70% and with 50–70% selectivity to acrolein. We investigate the influence of changing the catalyst acid strength by varying the niobia content and catalyst calcination temperature. Glycerol conversion and acrolein selectivity depend on the surface acid strength. Catalyst deactivation by coking is also observed, but simple oxidative treatment in air restores the activity of the catalysts completely.

Dehydration of Glycerol over High Surface Area Γ-alumina Supported Heteropoly Acid Catalysts

Dehydration of glycerol was performed over heteropoly acids (HPA), viz., silicotungstic acid (H-SiW), phosphotungstic acid (H-PW), and phosphomolybdic acid (H-PMo), supported high surface area γ-alumina (HSAI-S25) catalysts. Various physico-chemical studies of these supported catalysts indicate high dispersion of the active (HPA) species on the support surface. It was observed that the catalyst...

Catalytic oxidative dehydration of glycerol over a catalyst with iron oxide domains embedded in an iron orthovanadate phase.

An embedded catalyst for the oxidative dehydration of glycerol, featuring iron oxide (FeO(x)) domains on the surface of an iron orthovanadate (FeVO₄) phase, is developed. Catalytic reactions are conducted in a fixed-bed reactor at 300 °C with a feed composition N₂/O₂/H₂O/glycerol=66.6:1.7:30.3:1.5. Catalytic results show that the catalyst exhibits a better performance than an FeO(x) catalyst pr...

Facile Synthesis of a Novel Hierarchical ZSM‐5 Zeolite: A Stable Acid Catalyst for Dehydrating Glycerol to Acrolein

Catalytic biomass conversion is often hindered by coking. Carbon compounds cover active surface and plug pores, causing catalyst deactivation. Material design at the nanoscale allows tailoring of the catalytic activity and stability. Here, we report a simple synthesis of nanosized ZSM-5 materials by using a silicalite-1 seeding suspension. ZSM-5 crystals were grown from a deionized silica sourc...

Surface modified niobium oxide catalyst: synthesis, characterization, and catalysis

The molecular structures and reactivity of surface modified niobium oxide catalysts were determined by Raman spectroscopy, pyridine adsorption as well as the methanol oxidation reaction. Metal oxides (RexO,, CrOx, WOs, Moos, and V206) and acids (phosphate and sulfate) form a surface overlayer on the niobia support, and possess a structure similar to the metal oxide ionic species present in acid...

Metabolism of glycerol by an acrolein-forming lactobacillus.

Mills et al. (1954) and Serjak et al. (1954) have reported the production of acrolein in distillery grain mashes and identified the causative organisms as lactobacilli. In addition to the lactobacilli described by these investigators, bacteria representing at least four other genera have been observed to produce acrolein: Bacillus amaracrylus by Voisenet (1918) (see B. polymyxa in Bergey's Manu...
